FEO upgrades anthropomorphic robot to work with radioactive waste

In September 2022, a project to modernize an anthropomorphic torso-type robot for radioactive waste (RW) management was launched on the basis of FEO’s Leningrad production site. The new robot will be equipped with a three-fingered grip to improve motor skills and expand the functionality of application in strong radiation fields.

The robotic manipulator will be used at the stage of extraction, fragmentation and disposal of radioactive waste, which will reduce the radiation impact on the personnel involved in this work.

The modernization of the capture will allow working in a wider range of capabilities in accordance with the technical regulations for the extraction of elements of the reactor control and protection system.

“FEO has gained extensive experience in the use of robotic manipulators for sorting bulk radioactive waste and moving dangerous radioactive cargo” – commented Sergey Florya, Deputy Director General for Innovations and Overseas Business at FEO. – Next January the robot will be already updated”.

The robot modernization project is a step up towards the introduction of unmanned technologies for handling hazardous waste of various types by FEO.
